Objective:
Hearing consists of peripheral components (outer and middle ear, cochlea) and the central auditory system (cochlear nuclei to the auditory cortex). Speech perception relies on peripheral hearing abilities (i.e., pure-tone thresholds) and central auditory processing (CAP) and cognitive functioning. Specifically, working memory, executive function, attention, and verbal functioning allow for speech understanding. As a result, CAP deficits are also influenced by peripheral hearing sensitivity and cognitive functioning. Assessing CAP deficits can be difficult because of these complex interactions. Prior work has shown persons living with HIV (PWH) are at higher risk for sensorineural hearing loss compared to persons living without HIV (PWOH) after adjusting for age, sex, and noise exposure. Further, HIV is a risk factor for cognitive impairment, one example being Alzheimer's disease (AD) and its precursor, Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), with auditory dysfunction occurring in earlier stages of AD. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate: 1) the peripheral hearing sensitivity and CAP in PWH and PWOH; and 2) the association between cognitive function measures and CAP in PWH and PWOH.
Participants and Methods:Participants included 59 PWH (39 men and 20 women, mean age=66.7 years [SD=4.4 years]) and 27 PWOH (13 men and 14 women, mean age=71.9 years [SD=7.1 years]). Participants completed a standard neuropsychological battery assessing the domains of learning, recall, executive function, working memory, verbal fluency, processing speed and motor. Raw scores were transformed to demographically corrected, domain T-scores. Cognitive function was normal for 39 (66.1%) PWH and 16 (59.3%) PWOH while 43 (72.9%) PWH and 17 (63.0%) PWOH were determined to have MCI. Participants with dementia were excluded. Participants also completed a hearing assessment, a portion of which consisted of pure-tone thresholds, peripheral hearing measure, and dichotic digits testing (DDT), a CAP measure. Pure-tone air-conduction thresholds were obtained at octave frequencies from 0.25 through 8 kHz, including 3 and 6 kHz. A pure-tone average (PTA) was calculated from 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 kHz thresholds for each ear. The DDT involves the presentation of numbers from 1 to 10, excluding 7, in which two different digits are presented to one ear while two other digits are simultaneously presented to the opposite ear. The outcome of DDT is percent correct.
Results:PWH had slightly lower (i.e., better) mean PTAs in both ears compared to PWOH, but this was not statistically significant. Conversely, PWH had lower percent correct DDT results compared to PWOH, but this difference was also not statistically significant. Participants with impairment in verbal fluency, executive functioning, and working memory had significantly worse DDT results by approximately 10%, but only for right ear data.
Conclusions:PWH in our sample had better hearing than PWOH, which can be explained by PWH having a lower mean age. PWH had poorer DDT results, however, indicative of CAP deficits rather than peripheral hearing problems. Poor right ear DDT was associated with impairments specifically in frontal-based cognitive processes with an executive component.

Adult schistosomes live in the blood vessels and cannot easily be sampled from humans, so archived miracidia larvae hatched from eggs expelled in feces or urine are commonly used for population genetic studies. Large collections of archived miracidia on FTA cards are now available through the Schistosomiasis Collection at the Natural History Museum (SCAN). Here we describe protocols for whole genome amplification of Schistosoma mansoni and Schistosome haematobium miracidia from these cards, as well as real time PCR quantification of amplified schistosome DNA. We used microgram quantities of DNA obtained for exome capture and sequencing of single miracidia, generating dense polymorphism data across the exome. These methods will facilitate the transition from population genetics, using limited numbers of markers to population genomics using genome-wide marker information, maximising the value of collections such as SCAN.

This paper presents 31 new ΔR results of known-age, pre-AD 1950 shells from the South Pacific subtropical gyre region, spanning from the Tuamotu Archipelago in the east to New Caledonia in the west. This doubles the number of available ΔR values for the Oceania region. These values indicate that the regional offset (ΔR) from the modeled radiocarbon marine age has remained relatively constant over the last 100 yr prior to 1950. Variation from the norm can be attributed to various influences including localized upwelling around islands, the presence of a hardwater effect, direct ingestion of old carbon by the live shellfish, or enhanced exchange with atmospheric CO2 as a consequence of photosynthetic activity or increased aeration.

CuInSe2 thin films have been synthesized from binary precursors by Rapid Thermal Processing (RTP) at a set-point temperature of 290°C for 70 s. With appropriate processing conditions no detrimental Cu2-xSe phase was detected in the CIS films. The novel binary precursor approach consisted of a bilayer structure of In-Se and Cu-Se compounds. This bilayer structure was deposited by migration enhanced physical vapor deposition at a low temperature (200°C) and the influence of deposition parameters on the precursor film composition was determined. The bilayer structure was then processed by RTP and characterized for constitution by X-ray diffraction and for composition by Wavelength Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy.

Silicon multiple quantum wells confined by ZnS barriers have been grown by MOCVD. Calculations indicate that well widths must be less than 15Å for visible light emission, basically independent of the band offsets. No near-infrared photoluminescence (except bulk Si band-edge emission) was observed from samples with 70Å or greater Si layers, using stimulation at 325 nm with a He-Cd laser; hole trapping in ZnS may play a role. However, we found evidence of yellow light emission from samples which possibly contain Si quantum dots embedded in ZnS.

Silicon multiquantum wells ranging in width from 3 to 15 nm were deposited on closely lattice-matched ZnS barriers. MOCVD was used to deposit the ZnS films using diethyl zinc and hydrogen sulfide as the precursors; disilane was used to deposit silicon layers at low temperatures. Single and multiple silicon nano-layers were observed by transmission electron microscopy and secondary ion mass spectrometry. Photoluminesence studies revealed emissions peaks which were blue-shifted with respect to the edge emission from bulk silicon substrates. The observation of emission from silicon nanostructures shifted to wavelengths as short as the 800-850 nm range is consistent with the effects of quantum confinement in silicon nanostructures.

Laryngeal involvement with Candida is usually secondary to pulmonary candidiasis and is seen in patients with impaired immunity. We report a case of isolated laryngeal candidiasis involving the vestibular folds and presenting with stridor in a one-year-old child with Down's syndrome and hypogammaglobulinaemia. Vestibular fold reduction and fluconazole achieved resolution of the disease. Candidiasis should be considered in any potentially immunodeficient child presenting with symptoms of laryngeal disease.

It is suitably ironic that Socrates' classic submission to Athenian injustice some centuries before Christ provides, in the face of contemporary criticism of traditional education, amazing relevance for our time. Does citizenship make it immoral to defy the injustices of one's country?

The oracular writings of the “Christian Socrates” of the eighteenth century, Johann Georg Hamann (1730–1788), have attracted a number of important philosophers, theologians, and men of letters since the time of Immanuel Kant. Some insist that Hamann was a profound and heroic mystic, and some conclude that he was an impossible obscurantist. A figure of conspicuous protest against prevailing Enlightenment attitudes, Hamann's own views exhibit a strange alliance between religious (Lutheran) faith and sceptical (Humean) empiricism.

Johann Georg Hamann, that great critic of the Enlightenment, once satirized the contemporary philosophical effort of his time by writing certain memoirs of Socrates “fuer die lange Weile des Publicums zusammengetragen von einem Liebhaber der langen Weile.” No doubt another article on Anselm also runs the risk of contributing to ennui. Still, in the history of philosophy his work is virtually unrivaled as a source for philosophical puzzlement. Nearly every anthology which introduces philosophy includes a section of his Proslogion, and recent analysis continues to demand attention to “the ontological argument” which is attributed to him. The present offering is, perhaps presumptuously, one more attempt to untangle some of the puzzlement and to do away with some of the misunderstanding that has accrued to the Anselmic tradition.
